Finalnd Power Metal

Posted by grimnir On May - 3 - 20102 COMMENTS

There are some great finnish power metal bands. Some that stand out are (the now defunct) Twilightning, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, and of course Nightwish.

Nightwish is by the far the biggest, and to be quite honest they are one of the biggest metal bands in general right now in the whole world. If you enjoy great melodic power metal, check out some of these great metal bands form Finland. Also realize that there are some awesome bands which churn out a bit heavier fare, like Children of Bodom.

Until next time, keep it heavy!

        Satanic Black Metal Bands

Posted by grimnir On May - 2 - 20102 COMMENTS

Over the years since the birth of heavy metal, there have been many controversies surrounding satanism within the music. However, one should recognize that most of the time these accusations have been unfounded and merely brought against the musicians by special interest groups, usually with a very strong conservative political / religious stance.

Some examples of these are the accusations levied against Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath in the 70s, Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne in the 80s, and a slew of death and black metal bands in the 90s.

It should be recognized though that many of these bands, such as some Norwegian black metal bands, truly did espouse satanic ideals, among them Mayhem, Emperor, and Darkthrone. Other bands, such as Burzum, promoted a pagan and at times nationalist agenda.

          Metal Bands In Concert

Posted by grimnir On April - 24 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

I’m sure like most metal fans, I have some favorite memories of seeing metal bands in concert. Here at Heavy Metal Homepage, I, along with our other writers soon to come on board, will be bringing you stories from some of our most memorable metal shows.

A few that I can think right off the bat include Ozzfest 99, which had Fear Factory, Slayer, and Black Sabbath among others; Iron Maiden in 01; and Pantera, Slayer, and Morbid Angel in 02 I think it was. Look forward to trip reports from all three of these shows, along with many more.

If there are any specific metal bands in concert that you would like to read about or share, please let us know. We’d be more than happy to add it to our site.

          Until next time, stay brutal.

          Viking Metal Music

Posted by grimnir On April - 21 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

There is a lot of great nordic viking metal music out there. Many of these bands employ an epic sound mixed with expansive arrangements and wide open production techniques. Many may have been influenced to a degree by Bathory’s seminal album, Blood Fire Death.

Some bands that come to mind right away are Enslaved, Amon Amarth, Ancient Rites, and Borknagar. Of course, in reality viking metal is just an arbitrary label that we can use to distinguish between extreme metal bands. In the end though, the genres and classifications don’t matter a bit. Whether or not the music speaks to you is the bottom line.

Until next time, keep it heavy.

          Heavy Metal Drum Set Up

Posted by grimnir On April - 20 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Some of my favorite heavy metal drum setups over the years have not just come from the more extreme side of things. For instance, I have always loved Nicko McBrain’s kit. While it isn’t a flashy double bass kit, it still has some redeeming qualities (namely colored cymbals!).

Another guy’s kit which has a reputation for being sick is Gene Hoglan. This is one truly sick individual. Even way back in his Dark Angel days he went with an unorthodox drum set up. With his toms at a very flat incline, things look a bit off. However, what truly puts it over the top are some of the weirder components he uses. For instance, on the Individual Thought Patterns album, he used a large mortar shell, along with a boat propeller. Now if that’s not metal, I don’t what is!

Let me know whose drumkit you’ve always been a fan of. This was just a start, I could go on forever about other guy’s kits I love. But I’ll save that for a future post.

          French Thrash Metal Musical Groups

Posted by grimnir On April - 20 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

I know a lot of the times it is Bay Area or even German bands that get credit for leading the charge when it comes to top-notch thrash metal. But what about France? Are there any good French thrash metal musical groups?

There sure are my friend – check these guys out: Gojira, Loudblast, Massacra, and Scarve. Let me know if there are any more countries you want me to post about.

          Speed Metal Thrash Guitarist Alex

Posted by grimnir On April - 20 - 2010ADD COMMENTS

Someone asked me to write a post on the great speed metal thrash guitarist known as “Alex.” Well, the first one who came to mind was of course, Alex Skolnick of Testament.

This guy could really rip. Whether he’s shredding melodic leads on The Legacy and The New Order, or his jamming his solo stuff which was pretty eclectic yet deliciously technical, this guy knows how to play!

Seriously, if you wanna hear a thrash metal guitarist that can seriously rip, check out Alex. This guy’s unreal!

          Death Metal Guitars

In my personal opinion, the best death metal guitar (at least looks-wise) is the BC Rich Warlock with a widow headstock. This is just such a sick guitar, with that classic metal look to it. If you really wanna rip someone’s face off, might I suggest picking up one of these bad boys and just letting it rip!

          Until next time, stay brutal.
